THISISBLACKGROUND, a collection of conceptual fashion & beauty portraits, celebrates, documents, and re-imagines black & brown infused people of color from around the world.
Each individual model foregrounds a plain-studio backdrop within the collection, disturbing ontological, cultural, and proprietary questions of desire, freedom, fashion, national, trans-national, and ethnic identity within existentialist, and surrealist aesthetic movements.
Giovanni Martins’ THISISBLACKGROUND imbricates worlds of fantasy and reality, giving rise to individual expressions of people of color in a Modern world of materialism and commodification.
